Alabama homeowner inspecting doors and exterior entry points for fall pests in October

Temperatures are FINALLY dropping and football season is in full swing! October is a beautiful month in Alabama. Nice cool mornings to wake up to, weekend tailgates and falling leaves. Now here’s the not so good news. There will be a huge shift of pest pressure around your home.

When the temperature starts to cool some summer pests will stay around but others will try to find somewhere safe to overwinter. Mice and rats will start searching for consistent food and water around your garage, crawl space, attic, storage areas and in home.

Then there’s the “stink bugs” and Asian Lady Beetles. Lady Beetles look like Lady Bugs except they’re orange versus red and if you get close enough, you’ll find a white “M” shaped mark just behind their head. Lady Bugs remain our cute little friends. Asian Lady Beetles, not so much.

According to the Alabama Cooperative Extension your home can be susceptible not just the pests mentioned so far, cooler weather means an uptick in activity for ants, roaches, fleas, flies, silverfish, spiders, ticks as well. Once it gets closer to winter mice and rats will become a bigger problem around your home.

Below is our checklist for October pest control to help you find problem areas around your home that could be inviting pests in. We will also give you tips on how to eliminate food and water that can attract these pests.

Why You Should Perform Pest Control In October

There are many different pests that invade homes throughout the year.

You will find yourself dealing with mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, fire ants and more throughout the summer. When it comes to October you will want to take precautions to keep other pests from entering your home.

When the weather starts to cool insects will begin to search for warmer environments and consistent sources of food and water.

They may find that your home is the perfect environment.

Insects Will Want To Overwinter Inside Of Your Home

Many fall insects will overwinter in safe areas. Cracks in the ground, under tree bark, leaf debris, logs etc.

There are many safe areas inside of your home that they can overwinter in as well.

Inside wall voids, attics, crawl spaces, garages, around siding, storage areas and around windows/doors.

Stink bugs, Kudzu bugs, Asian lady beetle, box elder bugs and some species of roaches will invade your home in the fall.

Its always easier to prevent these bugs from getting inside your home rather than trying to deal with them once they have invaded.

Rodents Will Also Want To Find A Way Into Your Home

Mice and rats will start to look for food and water inside of your home as well.

Your home will provide them with all of these. They can find food, water and shelter inside of your home.

If you have a garage full of items that rodents can eat and nest under. They may never need to venture into your kitchen.

Rodents can be found in your attic, crawl space, wall voids, garages, pantries and storage areas.

Make sure to do these steps to prevent rodents from getting into your home in October.

Look For Ways That Pests Can Enter Your Home

Walking around the outside of your home and looking for holes that pests can enter is a great place to start.

Pests don’t need to have your front door open to get into your home.

They can enter your home through small cracks and holes.

Check Your Doors And Windows

These are the easiest ways for pests to get into your home.

☐ Check the seal on your garage door.

☐ Check any sliding doors.

☐ Replace any torn window screens.

Check For Holes Around Utility Lines
